Hi! We needed to take a moment to thank YOU. You have subscribed to our mailing list and you've shown your support for our new podcast venture.
When we started this podcast, we nerded out a bit and talked explicitly and with intention about what we wanted our business model to look like, with the biggest factor being having morals and ethics in true crime reporting.
It's easy to get swept up in true crime- clearly, it's a MASSIVELY growing niche for podcasts and shows. One thing we never want to do is forget that we are victim-centered and that although we may have best friend banter and wit, we always want to honor that the story we're telling is someone's worst nightmare.
We have done one episode with crimes against children in the BTK Episode 7, part 1 episode with the killing of the youngest Otero children. We wanted to let you know that although it's important to study the crimes to learn from them, we will not be doing numerous or frequent episodes on crimes against children.
We do include trigger warnings in the beginning of those episodes which we feel may need it. We're not trying to be trendy, we're just trying to respect that just because people are purposely listening to a true crime podcast, it doesn't mean they are inviting every story we tell into their lives. And we respect personal mental health boundaries- absolutely.
Jo and I (Jules) are both moms to young children and we actively also avoid most of the triggering stories for us!
There is a big question of ethics in true crime reporting which we wanted to address here and that is: what is our responsibility to the victim community as true crime podcasters?
Circling back to our nerdy meeting about our mission statement and business ethics, Jo and I purposely made a commitment that once we hit a certain income point and have paid off all our investments into this company, that 10 percent of all our combined earning (merchandise, advertising, collaborations, etc.) will be given directly back to support those affected by the horrible acts of violence that we tell. We hope to be able to accomplish this goal by the end of our first year, and once we do, we do promise transparency about which organizations receive our donations and why. There are so many amazing non profits working tirelessly to help people, and we need to be able to help them do it.
